You can see them coming towards you, and you just get that feeling they they don't appreciate a collision is imminent unless one of you does something about it. Typically your shoulder may well be on a collision course with their shoulder. The advice was, just prior to impact, to tense your shoulder just a smidge. Our French teacher assured us the other person would bounce off nicely and spin off to one side, whilst you act surprised and offer your half of the 2 way apology that follows.
